Paardenbenen koelen: een cruciaal onderdeel van modern sportmanagement In de moderne paardensport is het koelen van de benen na een zware inspanning heel gewoon geworden. Waar het vroeger vooral werd gedaan bij acute blessures, is het nu een standaard onderdeel van de dagelijkse management.  Het meest komt de natte koeling voor: koeling met water of ijs. Dit is wel altijd omslachtig. 

Het doel van koelen is drieledig:

  1. Vasoconstrictie: Door kou trekken de bloedvaten samen. Dit vermindert de toevoer van bloed en lymfevocht, waardoor zwelling (oedeem) en ontstekingsreacties worden beperkt.
  2. Warmteafvoer: De temperatuur in het been zo snel mogelijk omlaag brengen.
  3. Pijnstilling: Kou heeft een verdovend effect op de zenuwuiteinden.

 

Hoe gebeurt koelen op dit moment? 

1. Koud Water (Hydrotherapie)

  • Nadeel: Het verbruikt veel water en het water uit de kraan is vaak niet koud genoeg. Duurt lang en de omgeving wordt nat.

2. Ice Boots en Cool Packs

  • Crushed Ice Boots: zakjes waar ijs of schilferijs in gaat. 
  • Nadeel : ijs nodig uit vriezer en ijs smelt weg en daarmee het effect. 
  • Gel Packs: komen uit de vriezer. 
  • Nadeel :  Komen uit vriezer en kan bevriezing van de huid geven en daarnaast warmen ze sneller op dan ijs. 
  • Instant Cold Packs: Chemische reacties waardoor packs  koud worden.
  • Nadeel : verliezen snel hun temperatuur en niet duurzaam door eenmalig gebruik

3. Ice-Vibe koeling en trilling 

  • Nadeel : Komen uit de vriezer, voor herhaald gebruik moeten ze weer 2 uur in de vriezer liggen..
